As per the holy scriptures, Samudra Manthan (churning of the milk ocean) took place in the month of Saavan. The month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, as He acted as the savior of the universe. While churning of the ocean by gods and demons, a lot of things emerged out. Out of which, one of the most deadliest thing was poison Halahala. This poison was swallowed by Lord Shiva, as no one else could do it.
On consuming the poison, Lord Shiva saved the universe from coming to an end. The poison was stopped at his throat by Goddess Parvati, turning his throat blue. Since then, he is worshiped as Neelkanth.
Hence, worshiping Lord Shiva during this month is given an utmost importance. Monday is considered to be the favorite day of Lord Shiva; hence, fasting on Mondays is believed to bring good results for the devotees.
